Five Birmingham churches in our Presbytery combine youth
groups for amazing Sunday night fellowship.
In case you haven’t heard, Shades Valley is currently hosting a joint youth
group on Sunday nights, 5-7 pm. This group is comprised of students in middle
and high schools from five area PCUSA churches: Shades Valley,
Southminster, First Presbyterian, Oakmont, and Edgewood. So far, the group
has met twice here in our building with great success. Shades Valley will be the
host church at least through October. At that time a decision will be made
regarding a possible rotation through the other churches’ buildings. There has
been an average of about 30 kids and five or six adults assisting with the activities.
It should make all our members very happy to know that the person spearheading
this new initiative is none other than our own former youth member, Ben Acton.
The group starts out in the “Blue Room” downstairs and in the back parking lot for
gathering games and a little football. Eventually everything moves upstairs to the
Youth Suite on the third floor. At this time, the focus of the meetings is building a
bond between kids from five different churches. However, watching them interact
for even a few minutes can fool you into thinking the group has been together for
longer than a couple of weeks.
Several people have been asking what they can do to further the mission of this group First and foremost, pray for the group to bond together in a meaningful way. Also, pray
for the leaders who will be guiding these young people in this new spiritual journey. What a
great experience for these kids and for the "Beyond" ministry of Shades Valley.
